What is the difference between Prior Acts Coverage and Tail Coverage?

Accepted Answer

In a claims-made policy, Prior Acts Coverage provides coverage for your past patient exposure beginning with your policy's retroactive date, while Tail Coverage provides extended coverage for a number of years once a policy has ended due to events like career changes, hiatus, retirement, etc.

What is the difference between a Claims-Made Policy and an Occurrence Form Policy?

Accepted Answer

A Claims-Made Policy covers claims only if the incident happened and the claim is filed during the policy period (or an extended reporting period). Nearly all medical malpractice policies currently in force are claims-made. An Occurrence-Form Policy covers claims for incidents that occurred during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is filed — even years later. This policy structure is best suited for providers such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses.
